Essential Oil Evidence-Based Studies

  • TNF-Alpha and Essential Oils
    • Conclusion: Thus, some essential oils used as anti-inflammatory remedies suppress neutrophil activation by TNF-Alpha at a low concentration (0.0125–0.025%) in vitro.
    • LPS Induction
      • Lemongrass suppressed at 0.00625%, a few drops
      • Geranium suppressed at 0.020%
      • Spearmint suppressed at 0.017%
      • Most of the other oils showed activity just below or at 0.05%
      • Tea Tree was ineffective in LPS Induction due to a separate anti-inflammatory activity
    • PMA Induction
      • Lemongrass suppressed at 0.018%
      • Geranium suppressed at 0.026%
      • Tea Tree suppressed at 0.032%
      • Spearmint was ineffective in PMA Induction due to a separate anti-inflammatory activity
  • Tea tree oil inhalations modify immunity in mice
    • The results of this investigation demonstrate the strong anti-inflammatory activity of TTO, which in combination with its anti-microbial activity may give rise to successful therapeutic applications.
  • Neutrophil Suppression with Essential Oils
    • Cutaneous application of several essential oils, especially geranium oil, to mice suppressed the cellular inflammation induced by curdlan dose-dependently, as monitored by the MPO activity of peritoneal cavity and skin. This suggests that essential oils using in aromatherapy massage may suppresses the inflammatory symptoms related with neutrophil accumulation and edema.

Medical Aromatherapy by Kurt Schaubelt
“No wonder cures are available, though. However, going through a flu cycle with the help of essential oils and other natural measures will usually strengthen the body…Experience and research suggest that essential oils that contain either strongly electrophilic (phenols or terene alcohols) or strongly nucleophilic (citral) constituents are most effective in treating diseases caused by hulled viruses.”
